The composer built his Fourth Symphony around his own song \u201cThe Heavenly Life,\u201d which borrows text from a Bavarian folk poem. \u201cThe angelic voices gladden our senses,\u201d the poem proclaims, \u201cso that everything awakens for joy.\u201d Mahler\u2019s sunniest symphony invokes bells, harp, and woodwinds; in keeping with the lightness of the work, Mahler insisted the soprano perform \u201cwith childlike, cheerful expression;\u201d soprano Karina Gauvin joins the Festival in this role.
